Chapter 21

The next morning, Harry cooked us bacon sandwiches for breakfast. We ate them with groans of appreciation. I wiped my greasy fingers on a piece of kitchen towel and slurped my milky tea.

‘I still can’t get over how good the duck was yesterday,’ said Harry. ‘I had forgotten how delicious it can be.’

‘Hades has gobbled all of his too,’ said Mouse. ‘His bowl is licked clean for a change.’

‘I’m not buying duck for that ratbag,’ I said.

‘What if you win the lottery?’

‘It depends on how much I won.’

Mouse took out his tablet and started scrolling.

‘That’s a little antisocial,’ said Harry. ‘Can’t you do that later?’

‘I’m checking to see if Jim Swift has published anything about Ghita yet. I can’t find the article, but a poll taken as people left the hall has Ghita ahead of Penny and Craig with Geraldine Hooper in a close fourth place.’

I clapped with delight.

‘That’s wonderful. She’ll be so happy. Winning the debate is a massive move in the right direction.’

‘Will she come in to work this morning?’ asked Mouse.

‘I presume so, although she may have had a late night.’

‘I saw Joe Brennan sniffing around after the speeches. I wonder if he has made any progress with the ice maiden?’ said Harry.

‘Nothing she’ll admit to, but now we know he was coaching her before her big speech, the plot thickens.’

‘Wouldn’t it be great if they got together?’ said Mouse. ‘Joe’s such a solid boyfriend. He’s perfect husband material.’

‘That’s not actually an advantage where Ghita’s concerned,’ I said. ‘She prefers them shiny and shallow to plain and deep.’

Harry stood up, wiping his mouth. ‘I’m helping Grace and Max with their deliveries today. Do you need me for anything?’

‘Only love. I’m going into the shop to do a stock-take.’

‘I’ll come with you,’ said Mouse. ‘In case anyone demands a coffee.’

Harry kissed me with lips still tasting of bacon and put the dishes in the sink.

‘Leave them,’ said Mouse. ‘I’ll wash up.’

It took a while for us to get organised as I put on a load of laundry and cleaned the bathroom before leaving the house. I had a bout of nausea as I bent over to clean the bath, and I narrowly avoided being sick. I had forgotten to ring the hospital and check if they had identified the bacteria yet. I made a mental note to ring Dr Berra later from the shop. We walked to work as the autumn sunshine bathed the town in golden light. The sea gleamed as the low sun caught the waves. Soon it would be dark in the morning and dark coming home from work, but just then it seemed as if summer had stretched a warm tendril into the autumn to make the descent into winter more bearable.

I greeted several dog walkers and patted their pets on my way. Mouse smiled at them too but did not stroke their dogs. He had a strong preference for cats, which manifested in his bromance with Hades. I felt sorry that I would shortly lose him to University again.
